DOZENS VOLUNTEER AT ANC-BURBANK ANNUAL KICK-OFF MEETING
Subcommittees Gear Up for Packed Election-Year Agenda
Burbank, CA (October 3, 2001) - Armenian-American activists from
Burbank and Northwest Glendale showed enthusiasm and drive as they
signed up for subcommittees at the Burbank-ANC annual kick-off meeting
Friday, September 27 at Woodbury University. Led by ANC-Burbank
Chair Stepan Boyajian, the meeting outlined several key elections
and issues facing the Armenian-American community in the coming
months, emphasizing the need for all members to get involved.
"We're working on many important initiatives impacting our
community in the next several months and we thank the volunteers
who came out and demonstrated their commitment and readiness to
work," stated Boyajian. "We welcome others to also sign
up for an ANC subcommittee - it's a great way for Burbank Armenian-Americans
to get involved in public affairs and make a difference in the future
of our community. "
Introducing its eleven subcommittees, the Burbank-ANC outlined
the various initiatives it will undertake this year in the following
areas: community mobilization, government/electoral, schools, community
relations with Armenian and non-Armenian organizations, Genocide
Memorial and commemorative activities, public relations, fundraising,
Armenian business relations, Website development, and Northwest
Glendale-focused activities.
Boyajian stressed the importance of upcoming Congressional elections
in November, State Assembly and State Senate elections as well as
City Council elections in the spring, in addition to other efforts
aimed at involving Burbank Armenian-Americans in City boards, commissions
and elected posts. Discussing great strides made in the latter over
the last year, he recognized several ANC-Burbank members currently
in City of Burbank public service positions, including Houri Chalian,
Youth Endowment Services Fund; Garen Yegparian, Community Development
Goals Committee; Paul Krekorian, Child Services Commission; and
Mihran Toumajan, Civic Pride Committee.
ANC Western Region Board member Raffi Hamparian delivered final
inspirational words at the meeting, providing attendees with a snapshot
of the numerous achievements by local ANCs throughout the United
States in just the last few weeks and discussing the critical role
Armenian-Americans play at the local level.
"It's exciting to see the energy and spirit of all those who've
joined the subcommittees of the Burbank ANC. The Burbank Armenian-American
community has grown tremendously over the years and the local ANC's
grassroots work continues to play an important role in this development,"
explained Hamparian.
